Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
The sample is slowly cooled to about 3 -5 °C below the expected freezing point by stirring a thermometer in a cooling bath. Crystallisation is then triggered either by rubbing with the thermometer at the test-tube wall or by inoculation. The seed crystals are evenly distributed in the sample by stirring intensely for a short period. After initialisation of crystallisation, the thermometer is only slowly moved up and down without touching the test-tube wall until the highest temperature is reached. The highest temperature is recorded, accurate to 0.1 °C, and is given as the freezing point. Temperature correction, if given in calibration certificates, is accounted for.
Type of method:
method to determine freezing temperature
