Version / remarks:
ASTM D3828, Standard Test Methods for Flash Point of Liquids by Small Scale Closed Cup Tester
Principles of method if other than guideline:
A Rapid Tester Model RT-1 was equipped with a disposable fuel tank and a NBS (National Bureau of Standards) thermometer. The temperature at which the test was conducted was recorded from the mercury-in-glass thermometer and compared against the digital display which provided an average indication of the temperature at the instance of the reading. This data as well as the observations of FLASH or NO FLASH were recorded in a lab manual and later transferred to a computer.
