The degradation products of disodium fluorophosphate (sodium and fluorophosphate ions) are essential nutrients (food elements) for plants, and stimulate the growth of water plants (macrophytes) and/or algae (phytoplankton) and are ubiquitous in the environment.

Fluorides are known to be retained by soils and sediments. From here the fluoride make be taken up by plants, leading to an accumulation of fluoride in the leaves. Animals that eat plants containing fluoride may themselves accumulate fluoride, however accumulation occurs in the bones or shells rather than the edible tissues and is therefore not considered to pose a risk of exposure to humans via the environment nor bioaccumulation in humans.
