Description of key information

Supporting study:

In the GLP compliant study according to UN Transport Regulations test series 1-8 was conducted with the test substance in solution (55%) in order to classify this preparation according to the UN procedure for assignment to a division of Class 1. Based on the outcome of the studies the test substance in solution (55%) has not to be classified as explosive according to UN GHS and regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

Preliminary DSC measurements

In four different DSC-measurements (BASF SE, SIK Nr. 01/0983, 01/0984, 05/2322 and 16/0084 Please refer to IUCLID section 4.19) the heat of descomposition was determined to be greater than 1480 J/g (2400, 2800, 3190 and 1480 J/g) with an onset temperature of 280 °C (200, 190, 200 and 280 °C). Thus further testing with regard to explosive properties was required.

The results from the application of the class 1 acceptance procedure were as follows:

For safety reasons the sensitivity to impact and friction (as part of test series 3) was tested in a preliminary test.

Preliminary test

Sensitivity to impact and friction: Test 3(a)(ii) BAM Fallhammer (D)

Observation: no explosion or flames observed using an impact engery of 40 J Result: not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J

Explosive power: Test F3: BAM Trauzl test

Observation: Expansion of 1.3 cm3 per 10 g.

Result “No”

Box 2: Is the substance manufactured with the view to producing a practical explosive or pyrotechnic effect?

Answer: No

Exit: Go to Box 3

Box 3: Test Series 1

Propagation of detonation: Test 1 (a) UN Gap test (UN)

Test omitted according to Appendix VI of UN RTDG MTC as the outcome of the Test F3: BAM Trauzl test is “no”.

Result “-“

Effect of heating under confinement: Test 1 (b) Koenen test (D)

Observation: There is no effect from intensively heating the substance under hight confinement.

Result: “-“,no effect from intensively heating the substance under high confinement

Effect of ignition under confinement: Test 1 (c) Time/pressure test (GB)

Observation: The maximum pressure reached in any one test is less than 2070 kPa gauge.

Result: “-“,The substance show not the ability to deflagrate

Box 4: Is it an explosive substance

Answer: No

Exit: Go to Box 7

Box 5: Test Series 2

Propagation of detonation: Test 1 (a) UN Gap test (UN)

Test omitted according to Appendix VI of UN RTDG MTC as the outcome of the Test F3: BAM Trauzl test is “no”.

Effect of heating under confinement: Test 2 (b) Koenen test (D)

Observation: There is no violent effect from intensively heating the substance under high confinement.

Result: “-“,no violent effect from intensively heating the substance under high confinement

Effect of ignition under confinement: Test 2 (c) Time/pressure test (GB)

Observation: The maximum pressure reached in any one test is less than 2070 kPa gauge

Result: “-“,The substance shows slow or no deflagration ("-").

Exit: Go to Box 7

Box: 7
Result: Not class 1

UN procedure for assignment to a division of Class 1 the test substance is not considered to exhibit a danger of explosion. The result does not lead to a classification in Class 1.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available experimental test data are reliable and suitable for classification purposes under Regulation 1272/2008. The test substance is not considered to exhibit a danger of explosion. As a result the substance is not considered to be classified for explosiveness under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, as amended for the eighth time in Regulation (EU) No 2016/218.
