For the mixed xylenols, due to the structural similarities between the isomers, the physical chemical properties of them are comparable. Of particular importance to environmental effects are the values for the octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow) and water solubility. The Kowvalues range from 2.33 to 2.42 for each of the xylenols. Water solubility values at 25ºC are reported to range from 3540 mg/L to 7870 mg/L i.e. readily soluble). These values taken from the U.S. EPA High Production Volume Chemical Voluntary Testing Program for Xylenols and Ethylphenols, indicate that xylenol isomers and mixtures of them will distribute similarly in the environment and will have similar residence times in environmental compartments.
All of this information suggests that there would be little difference in ecotoxological terms between the isomers and therefore the data that is available can be used to support 3,5 xylenol.
