Since no studies investigating the ready biodegradability of 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoic acid, mixed esters with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3, UVCB) are available for this endpoint, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read across to the structurally related source substance 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid hexaester with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3, mono-constituent) was conducted. This read-across is justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID section 6.1) and within the analogue justification in IUCLID Section 13.

The study with 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoic acid hexaester with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3, mono-constituent) was performed according to OECD 301B under GLP conditions (Muckle, 2012). Activated sludge from a sewage wastewater treatment plant was used as inoculum. Microorganisms were exposed to a test substance concentration of 28.5 mg/L (mean) under aerobic conditions for an extended duration of 60 d. The results indicated that the test substance reached a mean degradation of 4.6%. Therefore, the test substance is not ready biodegradable according to the OECD criteria.

Thus, based on the available study from a structurally related read-across substance which is characterized by an equal ecotoxicological profile and a similar structure, it can be concluded that 3,5,5 trimethylhexanoic acid, mixed esters with dipentaerythritol (CAS 84418-63-3, UVCB ) is not readily biodegradable according to the OECD criteria.
