Additional information

The substance has been described in literature publications in the pharmaceutical field as photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT). Phthalocyanines exhibit a high absorption coefficient in the visible region of the spectrum, primarily in the phototherapeutic window (600–800 nm), and have a long lifetime of the triplet excited state in photosensitizers, which is necessary to produce 1O2 (the toxic species) efficiently. These features have led to proposals for their development for clinical use. However, some drawbacks related to phthalocyanine solubility and bioavailability must be addressed for it to be suitable for clinical use, particularly with chloroaluminum phthalocyanine (AlClPc), which is very hydrophobic. Accordingly, studies are done with intravenous application and AlCIP is formulated in polymeric nanocapsules ( Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis 56 (2011) 70– 77).

In such studies, the doses are so low that they cannot be used for the hazard assessement (ie ca 0.03 mg/animal).
