Description of key information

Readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).

Under anaerobic test conditions, the test substance is poorly biodegradable.

In the presented key study for ready biodegradability, more than 90 % of the initial glyoxal (20 mg/L DOC) was eliminated from  water after 19 days. The 10-days window was met. As neither toxicity nor  abiotic degradation was observed in the controls at the concentrations  tested, and as the reference substance proved the validity of the test system, glyoxal can be regarded as readily biodegradable in this test system.

In addition a supporting study (Kupec, 2003) was performed with the test substance-cross-linked protein hydrolyzate (Hykol B). The degradation of the test substance-cross-linked Protein hydrolyzate, was determined to be in a range between 86 and 45 %.

A presented key study for anaerobic biodegradation demonstrated that the test substance is poorly biodegradable und such conditions. Total gasified carbon was degraded by 10 - 20% after an exposure period of 62 days, measured by the biogas production.
