Description of key information

Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria: Key study: Read-across from experimental data on the category analogue Potassium Acetate (according to ISO 10253). The EC50 for Sodium Acetate is calculated to be greater than 417.92 mg/L, and NOEC is calculated to be 417.92 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for marine water algae:
417.92 mg/L

Additional information

Key study:

Experimental results from the category analogue Potassium Acetate. A Skeletonema costatum acute toxicity test (72 hours) has been performed on the Potassium Acetate based on ISO 10253 “Water Quality Marine Algal Growth Inhibition Test with Skeletonema costatum and Phaeodactum tricornutum”. The 72 hours EC50value for the this substance was found to be >500mg/L. The NOEC value was estimated to 500mg/L.

Based on this experimental data and the molecular weights, the read-across approach is applied and the EC50 for Sodium Acetate is calculated to be greater than 417.92 mg/L, and NOEC is calculated to be 417.92 mg/L.
