Four studies on the short-term toxicity of lauric acid to fish are available.

In the key GLP study (Ministry of the Environment of Japan, 2001) the toxicity to Oryzias latipes was tested under semi-static conditions according to OECD 203. After incubation time of 96 hours the LC50 was determined as 5 mg/L (meas. geom. mean).

Richterich and Mühlenberg (2001) summarised a non-GLP study conducted in 1981 according to ISO 7346-1 with Danio rerio under semi-static conditions. The resulting LC50 (96h) was 150 mg/L.

The publication by Onitsuka (1989) describes a 48 hours test with Oryzias latipes in freshwater and seawater and determined LC50s (48h) as >1000 mg/L in seawater and 8.6 mg/L in freshwater.

Geisel and Berger (1998) reported an LC50 (96h) of 150 mg/L in a test with Danio rerio. However, only a short abstract is available and was this rated reliability 4.

In conclusion, lauric acid shows toxic effects to fish at 5 mg/L, as this is the most sensitive reported LC50.
