Two reliable studies with Pseudomonas putida are available. One was conducted according to EN ISO 10712 and the other one according to a national guideline from Germany (LTwS Nr. 10, 1979). The basis for an effect was in both tests the growth inhibition of Pseudomonas putida within a 16 hours test period. Coenen (1988) observed no effect at the highest tested concentration of 1088 mg/L. Richterich and Mühlberg (2001) tested concentrations of 3000 and 10000 mg/L and observed effects at a concentration of 10000 mg/L. Thus, triacetin showed a low toxicity for Pseudomonas putida. As all tests were conducted with a single species system, which is more sensitive than a mixed microbial population in activated sludge and as triacetin is furthermore readily biodegradable, an inhibition of activated sludge in STP is not expected.
