Category name:
Salicylate esters

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
The category is defined as alkyl esters of salicylic acid. The category includes the source substances methyl salicylate, ethylhexyl salicylate, isoamyl salicylate, cyclohexyl salicylate and hexyl salicylate; but is not necesarily limited to these substances.
Category rationale:
The category is based on the rapid metabolism of the substances to liberate salicylic acid and the corresponding alcohol. The rationale for the category is that:

(1) systemic exposure will be largely or exclusively to the metabolites rather than to the parent substance
(2) toxicity will be due to salicylic acid rather than the parent substance or the alcohol metabolite
