Acrylic acid and Magnesium acrylate are regarded as not genotoxic. (See justification for read across in the attached read across justification document of the CSR.)
Justification for selection of genetic toxicity endpoint
In vivo studies are more relevant than in vitro studies for the
evaluation of the genetic toxicity.
Short description of key information:
Two in vitro test systems with acrylic acid showed a positive
result: the mouse lymphoma L5178Y TK locus assay and the cytogenetic
test in vitro with CHO cells. All the other in vitro tests were
negative. The more relevant results are given by the in vivo
genotoxicity studies. Here no activity of acrylic acid was observed.
Acrylic acid and Magnesium acrylate are regarded as non genotoxic.
Endpoint Conclusion: No adverse effect observed (negative)
Justification for classification or non-classification
All in vivo test systems gave no positive reaction to acrylic acid. As in vivo tests represent a higher and more relevant level than in vitro tests acrylic acid is classed as not genotoxic according to the classification and labelling criteria of regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and EEC Directive 67/548. This is in accordance with the European Union Risk Assessment Report Acrylic Acid, Volume 28ISBN 92-894-1272-0 (EU, 2002).
Therefore, it can be concluded that Magnesium acrylate and its solutions do not need to be classified and labelled as well.
