Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Icos-1-ene is considered to be readily biodegradable on the basis of read across from outside the category.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

A biodegradation screening study is not available for icos-1 -ene. In the absence of data we have evaluated the data available for other C20 olefins and used this for read across.

Olefins with a carbon number range of C20 -24 have been found to be readily biodegradable in a biodegradation screening test (Mead, 1998). After 28 days 92% biodegradation was observed in this modified sturm test.

Alpha olefins with a carbon number range of C20 -24 were not found to be readily biodegradable in an OECD 301D closed bottle test (Douglas and Halls, 1993). 31% biodegradation was observed after 28 days.

Although the study conducted with alpha olefins may be more directly applicable for read across than the study with olefins, both are suitable for read across to icos-1 -ene. In addition, the modified sturm test is a more appropriate study to use for poorly soluble test substances. Therefore, on the basis of read across icos-1 -ene is considered readily biodegradable.
