Test guideline
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- other: Distillation of Petroleum products at atmospheric pressure method , ASTM D 86
- Deviations:
- no
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- The initial determination of the boiling point range was determined in the SafePharmLaboratories using the distillation method according to the EC Directive 92/69/EEC A.2 Boiling Temperature. However, it was considered by the test laboratory that this was not appropriate for test materials of this nature. Therefore, the boiling point range was determined at Shell Research Ltd (non-GLP) using the ASTM D 86 method. This method uses specific apparatus that controls heating rate, temperature of the condenser and temperature of the collection vessel. These parameters are very specific for a particular petroleum product type and can have a significant effect on the boiling temperature obtained.
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Type of method:
- distillation method

Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- The data generated by the inappropriate Distillation Method of Annex V gave results of 98 to 217°C at 101.96 to 102.76 kPa [75% of the test material
(5 to 80% distillation) distilled over a significantly reduced range of 411 to 472 ± 0.5 K (138 to 199°C)].
The determination using the ASTM D86-method gave a boiling temperature range of 430 to 541 K (157 to 268°C) at 101.2 kPa.
