Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

EC10 (3h) > 100 mg/L (nominal) for respiration inhibition of activated sludge (OECD 209)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Two studies investigating the toxicity of 2-Butenedioic acid (E)-, di-C18 -22-alkyl esters (CAS 68921-53-9) to aquatic microorganisms are available.

A static test was conducted according to OECD 209 and GLP using domestic activated sludge as inoculum (Hammer, 2013). Concentrations of 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/L (nominal) were tested. The test substance was added in the required amounts according to the test concentrations directly to the test vessels. No respiration inhibition was observed up to the highest test substance concentration. The EC10 and EC50 are therefore > 1000 mg/L.

Another study was performed with 2-Butenedioic acid (E)-, di-C18 -22-alkyl esters (CAS 68921-53-9) but according to a German national guideline DIN 38412, part 27 (Kirch, 1995). In this study the inhibition of oxygen consumption for a 10000 mg/L filtered test item solution was measured after 30 min exposure time in Pseudomonas putida. As no inhibition was observed, the EC50 (30 min) is > 10000 mg/L. The test is reliable, but not appropriate enough for current regulatory demands and is therefore used as supporting information.
