Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The absence of mutagenicity is solely based on negative findings in routine bacterial gene mutation assays. In additional testing, in particular in vivo, benzene was found to induce chromosomal aberrations and the formation of micronuclei. It is an in vivo somatic cell mutagen for mammals and man. Most relevant adverse effects in animals repeatedly exposed to benzene were observed in the haematopoietic system.

(see EU 2008, RAR benzene)

Short description of key information:
Light oil (composite sample) showed no mutagenic potential in a valid Ames test. The negative result is confirmed by the absence of mutagenicity in bacterial mutation and other in-vitro assays carried out with the key components, benzene, toluene, and mixed xylene or xylene isomers.

Endpoint Conclusion:

Justification for classification or non-classification

As benzene is a major intrinsic constituent of light oil, this mixture has to be considered and classified as mutagenic.
