Description of key information
FAT 40210 was found to be hydrolytically stable, not readily biodegradable and expected to have low adsorption potential.
Additional information
The test substance is found to be hydraulically stable at pH 4, 7 and 9. In the incubated samples no significant decline of the test item concentration was observed. At the end of incubation at least 89 % of the initial concentration could be found. Under environmental relevant conditions (20 °C) 98 % of the initial amount were detected after 29 days of incubation.
As the test item was found to be stable further calculations (e.g. reaction rate constant or half-life) were not executed. This study is classified acceptable and satisfies the guideline requirements for hydrolysis studies.
A key study was performed to determine the biodegradation of FAT 40210 in water according to EU method C.5 and C.6.The BOD was found to b 17 mg O2/g test mat.The COD was found to be 709 mg O2/g test material. Under the conditions of this test (BOD5/COD) FAT 40210 was not readily biodegradable (2 % within 5 days).
In the light of percentage degradation observed in water in screening tests the test item FAT 40210 is considered not to be readily biodegradable.
In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, Section 9.3.2. this study need not be conducted if the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation (for instance a log Kow < 3) and/or a low potential to cross biological membranes. The substance has been demonstrated to have a partition coefficient value of < -6.29, an extremely low fat solubility, a high level of hydrophilicity plus is of a relatively large molecular size, indication that it is unlikely to cross biological membranes. As such, it is deemed inappropriate to test the substance for this endpoint, both on scientific and animal welfare grounds.
In accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex IX, Section 9.3.1. this study need not be conducted if based on the physicochemical properties the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption (e.g. the substance has a low octanol water partition coefficient). The partition coefficient (log Kow) value for the substance is -6.29, indicating that the substance has a low potential for adsorption. In addition, the water solubility of the substance is very high, indicating that the substance would dissolve into aqueous media rather than become adsorbed into soil / sediment media. As such, this study is therefore waived on the grounds.
