Reactive Black 5 -OH, the hydrolysis product of Reactive 5 bis-vinyl in water, was tested for acute toxic effects on zebrafish over an exposure period of 96 hours at a dose level of 500 mg/L. No abnormal behaviour or lethal effects were observed. Hence, the LC50 is above 500 mg/L.
In another study, Reactive Black 5 bis-ester, which rapidly reacts to Reactive Black 5 bis-vinyl and Reactive Black 5 -OH in water, was tested for acute toxic effects on orfe over an exposure period of 96 hours at dose levels of 1 to 500 mg/L. At 500 mg/L deaths occurred between 23 and 95 hours. Signs of toxicity at this dose level were swimming at water surface and supine position. No abnormal behaviour or lethal effects were observed at 1 to 100 mg/L. Hence, the LC50 is between 100 and 500 mg/L.
In a further study, Reactive Black 5 bis-ester, which rapidly reacts to Reactive Black 5 bis-vinyl and Reactive Black 5 -OH in water, was tested for acute toxic effects on orfe over an exposure period of 96 hours at dose levels of 1 to 500 mg/L. At 500 mg/L deaths were observed at 46 hours. Signs of toxicity at this dose level were swimming at water surface and reduced gill movements. No abnormal behaviour or lethal effects were observed at 1 to 100 mg/L. Hence, the LC50 is between 100 and 500 mg/L.
These test results leads to the assumption that the test substance underwent a detoxification from the bis-ester form to the alcohol form of Reactive Black 5.
