Additional information

The acute toxicity of 2,3 -Butanediol to freshwater fish has been tested according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38412 on the structural analogous substance 1,4 -Butanediol (CAS 110-63-4). The tests yielded 96 hr LC50 values of >10000 mg/L (BASF 1989) This data indicate that 2,3 -Butanediol has a very low degree of toxicity to freshwater fish.

The read-across is valid as both substances are readily biodegradable and they reveal a low toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. Furthermore, their molecular strcuture is comparable.
