Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information
Sodium ethanolate is classified according to Annex I to the Directive 67/548/EEC with R34 and GHS with H314 (Skin Corr. 1B).
Additionally two studies are available. A Corrositex Biobarrier Membrane test system was performed with sodium ethanolate at a concentration of 21 %. The break-through-time was 13:42 min and therefore showed corrosive properties. In addition, an in vivo study performed in rabbits according to OECD guideline 404 showed under semi-occlusive conditions necrosis after 3 min of exposure. This study was terminated after 48 hours due to animal welfare reasons. Since sodium ethanolate showed skin corrosive properties, it is expected to give similar results on the eyes.Justification for classification or non-classification
According to Annex I of the Dangerous Substance Directive (67/548/EEC) and Annex VI of the CLP regulation (EC 1272/2008), sodium ethanolate is classified as corrosive (R34 - causes burns) and Skin Corr. 1B - H314.
Based on the available data, sodium ethanolate (solid) fulfils the criteria for classification as corrosive causing severe burns:
DSD: R35 - causes severe burns
CLP: Skin Corr. 1A - H314
Liquid sodium ethanolate with a concentration of lower than 21 % fulfils the criteria of causing burns:
DSD: R34 - causes burns
CLP: Skin Corr. 1B - H314
