Methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide was barely present in the surface water of the Elbe. Only at the mouthing of the Mulde (36 ng/l) and at the last 100 km of the middle Elbe at Dömitz (10 ng/l) and Geesthacht (14 ng/l) appreciable concentrations could be found.
In general, the concentration patterns of methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide in sediments were similar to those in the surface waters. However, some differences were observed. First of all, low concentrations of methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide was found in SD samples taken directly downstream of the Czech border at Prossen. Within the next 250 river kilometers, concentrations remained constant or decreased slightly, until Dessau where a notable increase in Methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide concentrations was observed (62 μg/kg were measured at Dessau). Thus, majorcontaminationsof the Elbe with methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide and other R-Ph3P+seem to occur through the Mulde.
Analysis of a time series of suspended solid samples of the years 2005–2015 showed for methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide that the concentrations in SS were only in the low µg/kg-range with maximum concentrations of 5.9 μg/kg (2008) in Blankenese and 6.8 μg/kg (2015) in Barby, respectively. This is in accordance to low concentrations of methyltriphenylphosphonium bromide in the respective sediment samples from the sampling campaign in 2015.
