Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Parent compound palmitoyl chloride: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish. The substance hydrolyses rapidly in contact with water (t1/2 < 5 min).
Hydrolysis product palmitic acid: With high probability acutely not harmful to fish. No toxic effects within range of water solubility.
Hydrolysis product HCl: Acutely toxic for fish (pH-dependent).

Additional information

Parent compound palmitoyl chloride (CAS 112 -67 -4):

A fish study according to OECD TG 203 is available for palmitoyl chloride (BASF AG, 1998). Palmitoyl chloride hydrolyses rapidly in water. Therefore, fish are mainly exposed to its hydrolysis product, palmitic acid.

Test concentrations were clearly above the solubility limit of palmitic acid as unsoluble test material was visible and the test solutions were cloudy. Test concentrations were analytically verified. No toxic effects within the range of water solubility were observed.

Hydrolysis product palmitic acid (CAS 57 -10 -3):

For the hydrolysis product palmitic acid, a semi-static acute toxicity study towards O. latipes is available. The limit test was performed according to OECD TG 203. After 96 -h of exposure, the LC50 was determined to be greater than 6.9 mg/L (based on measured geomean concentrations; NITE 2000), which is clearly above the limit of water solublity. The test solutions were prepared using a vehicle.

Hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl; CAS 7647 -01 -0):

The hydrolysis product hydrochloric acid (HCl) was tested in a semi-static acute toxicity test according to OECD 203 with Cyprinus carpio. The 96 -h LC50 was 4.92 mg/L (acid equivalent to pH 4.3; OECD SIDS 2002).
