Biodegradation (28d) = 72.96 %; not readily biodegradable, since it failed to meet the 10-day window.

The ready biodegradability of the substance was assessed according to ASTM Guideline E 1720 -01, which is similar to OECD Guideline 301B. The test substance in a mineral medium was inoculated with the domestic activated sludge for 28 days under aerobic conditions. During this period the biodegradation of the test substance was determined on the basis of CO2 production. CO2 evolution was determined on the days 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 20, 24, 28. Concurrent blank (medium and inocolum) and reference (dextrose, medium and inocolum) run in parallel.

The reference substance recorded a biodegradability of 79.37 % on day 10. The test substance showed a biodegradation of 72.96 % after 28 days. According to the ASTM E1720: the method requirement for Readily Biodegradability is a minimum of 60 % organic carbon conversion measured via CO2 evolution achieved in a 10 day window after passing the 10 % Biodegradation threshold. The method requirement for Ultimately Biodegradability is a minimum of 60 % organic carbon conversion measured via carbon dioxide evolution achieved within the 28 day testing period. Based on the afore mentioned requirements, the test substance can be considered as ultimately biodegradable. Taking into account the requirements of OECD301B, the substance cannot be considered as readily biodegradable as it failed to meet the 10 -day window requirement. According to Chapter R.7b: Endpoint specific guidance, Version 4.0 -June 2017: in certain cases when results of ready biodegradability tests (i.e. OECD 301 series or OECD 310) indicate that the pass level criterion is almost fulfilled (i.e. ThOD or DOC slightly below 60 % or 70 % respectively) such results can be used as evidence for inherent biodegradability. This is also the case when the pass level criterion is fulfilled but the 10-day window criterion is not.

To sum up, the substance is not readily biodegradable but could be considered as an ultimately biodegradable and potentially inherently biodegradable.
