- Earthworms were obtained from Blades Biological, Cowden, Edenbridge, Kent, UK and maintained in a 20 L platic tray at a temperature of approximately 21°C on a substrate consisting of 50% by volume peat and 50% by volume animal manure.
The test organisms were with clitellum and were transferred into artificial soil approximately 24 hours prior to the start of the test.

- There were no significant mortalities or sub-lethal effects of exposure in 60 earthworms exposed to a test concentration of 1000 mg/kg for a period of 14 days.
There were three worms unaccounted for after Day 14 in the control and four worms unaccounted for after Day 14 in the 1000 mg/kg test concentration. This was considered not to affect the outcome or validity of the test as the overall mean mortality value was less than 10% in both the controls and the 1000 mg/kg test concentration.
It was considered unnecessary and unrealistic to test at concentrations in excess of of 1000 mg/kg.
The results of the definitive test showed the highest test concentration resulting in 0% mortality to be greater than or equal to 1000 mg/kg and the lowest test concentration resulting in 100% mortality to be greater than 1000 mg/kg.
There were no observed sub-lethal effects of exposure of Eisena foetida to the test material. - Results with reference substance (positive control):
- The NOEC was 10 mg/kg. The results from the positive control with chloroacetamide are within the normal range for this material of 10 to 50 mg/kg.
- Reported statistics and error estimates:
- There were no significant differences (p>0.05) between the control and 1000 mg/kg test groeps in terms of weight on Days 0 and 14.
Applicant's summary and conclusion
- Conclusions:
- The acute toxicity of he test material, to the earthworm Eisenia foetida, in an artificial soil test has been investigated and gave a 14-Day LC50 value of greater than 1000 mg/kg. Correspondingly the NOEC was 1000 mg/kg.
