- En ce qui concerne la partie métallique de la substance à enregistrer (le Chrome), les observations suivantes peuvent être faites:
- En ce qui concerne la partie organique de la substance à enregistrer (acétylacétone), les observations suivantes peuvent être faites: le degré relativement élevé de distribution dans l'eau de la 2,4-pentanedione est basé à la fois sur son hydrosolubilité et sa faible pression de vapeur. Selon les critères de Thomas (1982), La constante de la loi de Henry de 0,555 Pa m3 / mol indique une volatilité modérée à partir de l'eau (OECD, 2001). Dans un test MITI I qui correspond à une étude OCDE 301 C, il a pu être démontré que 2,4-pentanedione est facilement biodégradable (79 - 88% dans les 28 jours). En raison de sa structure chimique, la substance ne subira ni hydrolyse dans l'eau ni photodégradation par la lumière directe du soleil. Basé sur ces observations, une dérogation à l’obligation d’essai de l’hydrolyse de la partie organique de la substance à enregistrer (la 2,4 -pentanedione) peut être invoquée.
Compte-tenu de sa solubilité dans l’eau d’environ 1.0 g/L, la substance à enregistrer: acétylacétonate de chrome (substance cible) se dissocie presque entièrement en espèces chargées en milieu aqueux (les deux substances sources): les anions organiques d’acétylacétone (aussi appelé 2,4-pentanedione) et les cations métalliques de chrome trivalents (Cr3+). La méthode d’évaluation de l'hydrolyse de la substance à enregistrer peut donc être basée sur une approche par références croisées (« Read across »), en considérant l'hydrolyse de la partie organique et de la partie inorganique séparément dans un premier temps, et en conjonction par la suite pour l’évaluation finale.
- Puisque l'hydrolyse change la forme chimique mais ne se décompose pas, le concept de dégradation des métaux par hydrolyse n'est pas pertinent dans la prise en compte de leur devenir dans l'environnement. Une dérogation à l’obligation d’essai de l’hydrolyse de la partie inorganique de la substance à enregistrer (le Chrome trivalent) peut être invoquée en accord avec l'article 1 et 2 de l'annexe XI REACH. Le chrome est trouvé de manière naturelle dans l'environnement mais peut aussi provenir de sources anthropogéniques. Dans les eaux de surface, le chrome existe dans deux états d'oxydation, 3+ (III) et 6+ (VI) et s'adsorbe facilement dans les sédiments. Le chrome (III) est moins toxique que le Cr (VI) et sa faible solubilité dans l'eau fait qu’il précipite très facilement et limite donc sa biodisponibilité (Maycock et al. 2007). En conséquence, le chrome trivalent peut être considéré comme rapidement et facilement biodégradable, en ce sens que le concept de biodisponibilité est appliqué.
