Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Persistence (P/vP)

A ready biodegradability study according to OECD Guideline 301C (Ready Biodegradability: Modified MITI Test (I)) is available for dodecyl(2-hydroxy-3-sulphonatopropyl)dimethylammonium, which despite showing that mean measured BOD reached 63% of ThOD after 28 days, contemporary mean DOC removal was limited to 65%. Moreover, LC-MS analysis revealed that although the main component of the test substance had been degraded by removal of the dodecyl carbon chain, a metabolite ("Converted product A") remained in all three test vessels. The test substance was therefore not fully mineralised under the test conditions, and could not be classified as readily biodegradable.

No other biodegradability data are available. As such, it is not possible to confirm whether dodecyl(2-hydroxy-3-sulphonatopropyl)dimethylammonium meets the P/vP criteria. However, given that the criteria for ready biodegradability were not fulfilled, the substance should be regarded as potentially persistent.

Bioaccumulation (B/vB)

Partition coefficient values have been calculated using KOWWIN (v1.68 estimate within the in EPI Suite software). The components calculated had Log Kow values ranging from -7.24 to -0.39. The main constituent, dodecyl(2-hydroxy-3-sulphonatropropyl)dimethylammonium, had a calculated Log Kow value of -1.30. As such, the substance is not considered to be bioaccumulative.

Toxicity (T)

Long-term aquatic toxicity data are not available for fish or aquatic invertebrates, however a 72 h freshwater algal toxicity study resulted in the calculation of an ErC50 value of 4.58 mg/L (95% confidence limit: 4.34 to 4.83 mg/L) and a corresponding NOEC value (growth rate: 0-3d ) of 0.508 mg/L. However, based on the available acute toxicity data alone, it is not possible to conclude with certainty that the material is not T.
