Experimental data on the ready biodegradability of the substance Reaction mass of bis[2-[2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl] adipate and [2-[2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethoxy]ethyl](3,6,9,12-tetraoxahexadecyl)adipate (EC 943-330-9) are not available. The assessment is therefore based on read across data and on QSAR calculations performed with the main substance components. Read across was conducted to the structural analogue substance Bis(2-(2-butoxyethoxy)ethyl) adipate (CAS 141-17-3). In accordance with Article 13 (1) of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, "information on intrinsic properties of substances may be generated by means other than tests, provided that the conditions set out in Annex XI are met.” According to Annex XI, Item 1.5, of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 substances can be considered similar if their physicochemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties are likely to be similar or follow a regular pattern as a result of structural similarity. The target substance and the source substance consist of adipic acid esterified with ethoxylated alcohol moieties. The target substance is a multi-constituent substance consisting of diesters of adipic acid whereas the source substance is a mono-constituent substance.
The target and the source substance are characterised by a relatively high water solubility (WS> 0.5 g/Lat 20 °C), low vapour pressure (<0.0001 Pa at 20 °C)and low log Koc values (log Koc <3). Thus, the substances are expected to have a similar environmental fate and ecotoxicity profile. A detailed justification of the Analogue Approach is attached in IUCLID section 13.
The read across data in combination with the QSAR calculations indicate a ready biodegradability of the target substance. The substance will be extensively eliminated in conventional sewage treatment plants. Thus, the substance quantities released to water bodies via STP effluents are negligible.
If released to the environment, the target substance will be mainly present in water due to the relatively high water solubility (WS: 6.23 g/L at 20 °C). Due to the ready biodegradability persistency in natural water bodies is not expected. The potential to adsorb to soil and suspended particles is relatively low as indicated by the low log Koc values (log Koc <2) calculated for the main substance components. Due to the low volatilization potential of the substance (VP < 0.0001 Pa at 20 °C) an accumulation in air and subsequent transportation and deposition into other environmental compartments is not expected.
