Description of key information

Acute studies:


The 96 h LC50 of benzyltoluene to zebra fish is concluded to be > 267 µg/L, under the conditions of the test. The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) is concluded at the highest achieved concentration in test water NOEC= 267 µg/L.  


Benzyltoluene is not toxic to daphnia at the maximum achivable concentration in the test media. No adverse effect was observed and so, EC50 > 0.24 mg/L after 48h exposure.


In an OECD 201 TG compliant study performed under GLP, benzyltoluene did not affect algal growth rate over a 72 h period, EC50>176 µg/L.


No effect was observed until the maximum achievable concentration in the test media.


No inhibition of respiration of Pseudomonas putida up to 0.99 g/L.


 


Chronic studies:


The overall NOEC according to the OECD 210 TG of Benzyltoluene for the early life stages of fish is 0.064 mg/L and the overall LOEC is 0.21 mg/L.


The effects of a chronic exposure to the test item on the reproduction of Daphnia magna was investigated according the OECD 211 TG. The evaluation was based on the time-weighted mean concentrations. Under the experimental conditions and after 21 days, the EC10 value estimated for the most sensitive endpoint cumulative number of offspring was 0.043 mg test item/L.


In an OECD 201 TG compliant study performed under GLP, benzyltoluene did not affect algal growth rate over a 72 h period at the maximum achievable solubility.
