Argumentation:

During the DSC experiment run in the context of study No. 11-918025-039, a preliminary heating procedure at 10°C/min was conducted from -60°C to 600°C. This preliminary test was decomposed in two assays; the first between -60°C and 50°C, and the second between 25°C and 600°C. The first assay did not reveal any endothermic or exothermic events. During the second assay, an endothermic peak was observed at 76.2°C. A main test was then carried out using a heating procedure from 20°C to 400°C or 600°C at 10°C/min, and was decomposed in two assays (the first up to 600°C and the second up to 400°C). These two assays also revealed endothermic peaks at 76.6°C and 76.3°C, respectively. These endothermic events reflected the fact that the rare earth salt solubilised in its hydration water. Indeed, the hydrated rare earth salts, such as the hydrated form of samarium trinitrate, loose their water of hydration when heated. As these water molecules are loosely bound and as the amount of water in the substance is significant, the attached water is released and the rare earth salt solubilizes in water. As a result, it is concluded that samarium trinitrate did not melt or boil over the temperature range tested. These results confirmed that the vapour pressure of samarium trinitrate can be considered as negligible.
