- GENERATION OF TEST ATMOSPHERE / CHAMBER DESCRIPTION
- Exposure apparatus: The inhalation exposure system comprised an ADG snout-only inhalation exposure chamber, restraining tubes, a jet atomiser, air supply and extract lines, which attached to the top and bottom of the chamber respectively and an air supply to the atomiser. A filtration system was incorporated in the extract line.
- Exposure chamber volume: approximately 30 litres
- Source and rate of air: The compressed air flow rate exiting the jet atomiser was 9 litres/minute; the extract airflow
rate was set at 10 litres/minute.
- Method of conditioning air: Air supply and extract were monitored using in-line
flowmeters, checked at intervals throughout the exposure and recorded manually.
- System of generating particulates/aerosols: The aerosol generator, a stainless steel concentric jet atomiser (manufactured in house by Inhalation Engineering services), was designed to produce and maintain an atmosphere containing a high proportion of respirable droplets.
- Method of particle size determination: The mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) and the geometric standard deviation (σg) of the droplet aerosol were calculate assuming a log-normal distribution of particle size.

3.4 Lung - Gross pathology:
- The macroscopic examination performed after a single exposure and a 14 day observation
period revealed enlargement of the liver in three treated male animals. This finding most
likely reflected the large size of these animals rather than exposure to the test substance.
The nature and incidence of all other findings were consistent with the commonly seen
background of macroscopic changes.

- Conclusions:
- Under the conditions of this study the LC50 (4 hour) of Bis(C9(Branched)Alkyl) Benzene-1,4-Dicarboxylate
is in excess of 5.20 mg/L for male and female rats.
