In order to determine the terrestrial toxicity of the substance EC 939-682-8 data on the substance proper and a suitable read-across substance (EC 931-700-2) are available.

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5. Grouping of substances, a read-across to the structurally related Alkyl Dimethyl Betaine (EC 931-700-2) was applied in order to evaluate the toxicity to soil macroorganisms (annelids). The read across is justified due to the structural similarity of the analogue substances and similar physico-chemical properties resulting in a similar environmental fate and ecotoxicity profile. Further justification is given in the analogue justification attached to section 13 in IUCLID. No mortality (28 d), behavioural abnormalities (28 d) or significant differences in the reproduction rates (56 d), body weight changes (28 d) or feeding activity were found, even at the highest test concentration. The 28 d/56 d NOEC for mortality, growth, reproduction and feeding activity was determined to be 1000 mg test item/kg soil, i.e. the highest tested nominal concentration (IBACON, 2013).

For the toxicity to terrestrial plants and soil microorganisms two studies are available for the test substance EC 939-682-8.

For terrestrial plants ER50 values were in the range of 152 to >1000 mg sol/kg soil dw, with lettuce being the most sensitive plant (EC50 = 152 mg sol/kg soil dw). The NOER was found to be ranging from 12.3 to 333.3 mg sol/kg soil dw, with cucumber and turnip being the most sensitive organisms (NOER = 12.3 mg sol/kg soil dw) (Wildlife International, 2014a).

There was no inhibition of nitrate formation after 28 d in the study on soil microorganisms (Wildlife Interntional, 2014b) and it was concluded that the EC50 value for inhibition after 28 d was greater than the highest tested concentration of 1000 mg a.i./kg dry soil.
