Short-term toxicity to fish:

One key study is available for this endpoint. The acute toxicity (assessed by lethality) of the test item REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2 toDanio rerio (freshwater fish) was assessed by the GRL (2010) according to the OECD Guideline 203 and in compliance with OECD (2004) Good Laboratory Practice standards. Based on the results of preliminary test, a limit test was performed at an estimated nominal concentration of 100 mg/L for the test item.
Ten fish were equally distributed among two replicates of each control and test vessel (100 mg/L) and exposed under static conditions to REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2 dissolved in dilution water at a temperature of 22.4 ± 0.5°C for 96 hours. These organisms were supplied by “Elevage de la Grande Rivière” (69490 Saint-Forgeux) and were in good condition at the beginning of the test. Water quality was within normal limits during the toxicity test. Observations were made on the number of dead fish and the incidence of sub-lethal effects after 2 hours and at intervals not exceeding 24 hours.
Analytical monitoring has been performed at the beginning and at the end of the exposure period. It consists in ionic chromatography of fluorides. In order to calculate the correlation factor between fluorides concentration and the concentration of metallic fluorides in the samples, analysis of aluminium, chromium and nickel were performed on the solutions by ICP-MS. An average factor allowing to pass from fluorides concentration to the test item (metallic fluorides) concentration can be estimated to 2.165. This calculation allows to express LC50as REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2.
The 96h LC50value based on effective concentrations of fluoride ions was above 37.3 mg/L. This result is expressed in terms of geometric mean of effective concentrations of fluoride ions. The 96h LC50value based on effective concentrations of test item was estimated. It was above 80.7 mg/L.
Based on the results of this study, the test item REACTION MASS OF AlF3/CrF3/NiF2 is considered as not dangerous to the aquatic organisms tested in accordance with the Directive 67/548/EC.
