Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

Additional information

No experimental data regarding carcinogenicity is available for nickel carbonate and -hydroxide.

No epidemiological study has addressed the potential carcinogenic effect of nickel carbonate or -hydroxide specifically.

EU C&L Dossier: Nickel carbonate hydroxide is classified as Carc. Cat. 1; R49 (GHS: Carc. 1A [inhalation]).

In the case of respiratory carcinogenicity, where slightly water soluble nickel compounds such as nickel subsulfide

have been demonstrated to be carcinogenic, the classification for the carcinogenicity of

nickel hydroxide carbonate should default to the worst case scenario which would be that

of a "known human carcinogen".
