Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The available key study was completed according to internationally accepted guidelines and GLP including monitoring of test item concentrations and certificate of analysis. Caution was taken to adjust the pH in test solutions due to the strong caustic properties of the test substance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
9.3 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
1 mg/L

Additional information

An algae study has been performed with the submission substance on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The study was performed according to internationally accepted guidelines and GLP. Chemical analysis demonstrated a decline of test item concentration in the test media throughout the test period of 72 hours. This decline was inversely correlated to test item concentration and restricted to the active ingredient BHMT while the other active ingredient, HMD, was demonstrated to be stable throughout the experiment. Because the available supporting study on HMD demonstrates a very low toxicity to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (LC50 72h, GR: > 100 mg/L, EC10 72h, GR 118 mg/L) the evaluation was based on time weighted mean measured concentrations of the active ingredient BHMT and related to the submission substance based on test material composition (53.5% BHMT). Caution was taken to adjust the pH in test solutions due to the strong caustic properties of the test substance.

From the biological results and the results of the analytical monitoring, the following effect concentrations were calculated for the submission substance:

EC10 (72 h, growth rate): 1.0 mg/L (IC95% = 0.65-1.38)

EC50 (72 h, growth rate): 9.3 mg/L (IC95% = 7.9-12)
