JUSTIFICATION OF THE WEIGHT OF EVIDENCE APPROACH
The following endpoint study records
report fifteen publications, which provide logKow values for salicylic
acid with reliability scores of 2, 3 or 4.
Whatever the method used (shake flask, HPLC, QSAR and titration), the values reported are within the range of -1 to 3.05, leading to the same conclusion (except for the highest one) that the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation.
Among these 15 publications, no key study has been selected as none follows the current OECD guidelines nor reports compliance with GLP. Therefore, the weight of evidence approach is applied using studies of reliability scores 2 and 4. One study of reliability 3 has also been integrated into the weight of evidence approach because it used a method sufficiently described and similar to the OECD guideline 117 but under different conditions.
Consequently, this weight of evidence approach uses values in a range from 0.35 to 2.64. The conclusion for this endpoint is that the substance has a low potential for bioaccumulation. The mean value of Log Kow for salicylic acid is around 2.
