Two studies are available for aluminium dihydrogen triphosphate (CAS 13939-25-8). One study on the acute toxicity of the substance to Gold Medaka (Oryzias latipes) was conducted according to OECD 203 under semi-static conditions (MOE, 2003). The test substance is poorly soluble in water, therefore, a suspension of the test substance in the dilution water was prepared to the equivalent of 100 mg/L, and agitated for 48 hours, after which any test substance that had not dissolved was removed by filtration; the resulting filtrate was used as test solution. The test concentration was confirmed by analysis. The geometric mean of the measurement at the start of exposure and the measurement after 48 hours was used to calculate the results. There were no effects on survival up to the solubility of the test substance in test medium (96 hour LC50 >0.327 mg/L (100 mg/L nominal). The second study on the acute toxicity of the substance to Gold Medaka (Oryzias latipes) was conducted according to JIS K0102-1998-71 (METI, 2001). The study was set up as a semi-static limit test with a nominal concentration of 250 mg/L. After 96 hours a LC50>250 mg/L was determined.
Comparable results were determined a study on the acute toxicity of the structural related aluminium metaphosphate (CAS 13776-88-0) to Danio rerio. The study was set up according to OECD guideline 203 and GLP (Simon, 2014). The test was conducted under semi-static conditions for 96 h. Since the test item has also a low water solubility, the test media were prepared using the Water Accommodated Faction (WAF) approach according to the OECD guidance documents No. 23 and 29 to obtain the maximal solubility of the test item under the test conditions. There were no concentration-dependent effects on survival up to the highest tested concentration. Thus a LC50 > 0.156 mg Al/L based on the measured aluminium concentrations was determined (nominal: LC50>100 mg/L).
Thus, based on the available data aluminium dihydrogen triphosphate (CAS 13939-25-8) is considered not acutely toxic to fish.
