Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Biodegradation in water: screening tests
Administrative data
Link to relevant study record(s)
Description of key information
The substance is readily biodegradable under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, as shown in 15 screening tests for ready biodegradability in accordance with OECD 301 A-F (10 studies with reliability 1; 3 studies with reliability 2 and 2 studies with reliability 4), 2 screening tests for inherent biodegradability in accordance with OECD 302B (both with reliability 4) and 3 screening tests for potential anaerobic biodegradability in accordance with OECD 311 (2 studies with reliability 1 and 1 study with reliability 2)
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Biodegradation in water:
- readily biodegradable
Additional information
Screening for ready biodegradability in an aerobic aqueous medium:
The substance has been investigated 15 times for its ready biodegradability in an aerobic aqueous medium in accordance with OECD Guidelines; 301A (5 times), 301D (3 times), 301E (3 times) and 301F (4 times). In accordance with the REACH Guidance and the OECD Guidelines, the 10-day window should not be applied to interpret the results of the tests; the substance consists of homologues of surfactants composed of alkyl chains of varying length. It is anticipated that a sequential biodegradation of the individual structures takes place. Although with 4 of the 16 tests the pass level for ready biodegradability was (just) not met, it is considered justified to conclude that the substance is readily biodegradable, taking into account all the available information:
Observed levels of biodegradation, obtained within 28 days, in the studies rated with reliability 1 and 2:
- OECD 301A and OECD 301E (based on DOC removal): 66 - 84%;
in only 1 of the 6 studies, rated with reliability 1 and 2, the pass level of 70% was not met
- OECD 301D and OECD 301F (based on theoretical oxygen demand): 37 - 84%;
in only 2 of the 7 studies, rated with reliability 1 and 2, the pass level of 60% was not met
Screening for inherent biodegradability under optimised aerobic conditions:
The substance has been investigated twice for its inherent biodegradability under optimised aerobic conditions in accordance with OECD 302B. The pass level of 70% was reached in both studies, rated with reliability 4 (83 and 92% after 28 days), therefore supporting the conclusion readily biodegradable.
Screening for anaerobic biodegradability
The substance has been investigated 3 times for its biodegradability under anaerobic conditions in accordance with OECD 311. In 2 of the 3 studies, the theoretical gas production was 75% or more, showing complete anaerobic biodegradation in accordance with OECD 311 (75% after 42 days and 103% after 28 days). In the third test, this pass level was just not met (62% after 61 days). Taking into account the available information, it is considered justified to conclude that the substance is completely biodegradable under anaerobic conditions.
