No data on toxicity of tripotassium citrate 866 -84 -2 to aquatic invertebrates are available. A 24 h aquatic invertebrate study is, however, available for the parent acid of tripotassium citrate, citric acid 77-92 -9 with D. magna in a neutralised solution. It is considered appropriate to read across the aquatic invertebrate results to trispotassium citrate 866 -84 -2 because under conditions relevant to ecotoxicity assessment, the potassium salt of citric acid is expected to be fully dissociated. Potassium is not expected to contribute to the toxicity of the substance, being a ubiquitous element.

The study determines an LC50 value based on mortality of the test organism, by current standards it is thought by the reviewer to be more accurate to refer to an EC50 value based on immobility, due to the difficulties is determining mortality of daphnids by visual inspection. Therefore a 24 h EC50 value of 1535 mg/L was determined for the effects of citric acid 77 -92 -9 on D. magna.

The resulting EC50 is for citric acid is 1535 mg/L, which is equivalent to 1535 * 1.59 = 2441 mg/L of tripotassium citrate.
