Description of key information
The substance is biodegraded in the environment. Based on experimental data and model predictions, menthyl acetate is characterised as inherently biodegradable.

The substance was steadily biodegraded in the available valid closed bottle test according to EU Method C.4-E, but the pass level for ready biodegradability of 60% was not reached at the end of the 28-day test period. Menthyl acetate racemic therefore was considered to be not readily biodegradable under the conditions of the test. At the end of the test, a significant fraction of the test substance was degraded (48% of substance was removed) and biodegradation was still ongoing. This is a clear indication that extensive primary biodegradation has occurred. Additionally, the substance was not inhibitory to microbial activity in the toxicity control of the test on ready biodegradability. It may therefore be anticipated that the substance would have been degraded further if the test was extended. Information obtained from modelling with estimation tools can be used to support this as described in ECHA guidance R.7b. According to the predictions with the estimation tools BIOWIN 2 and 3, the substance should be regarded as biodegradable. However, it should not be regarded as readily biodegradable based on the prediction with BIOWIN 6.
Based on the available experimental data and model predictions it is concluded that significant biodegradability of the substance occurs in the environment. The substance does not fulfil the criteria for ready biodegradability but is considered as inherently biodegradable on the basis of the findings of the study on biodegradability and predictions with the BIOWIN estimation tools. Consequently, menthyl acetate should not be considered as persistent in the environment.
