Softanol 30 is readily biodegradable as determined in two tests (Mitsubishi, 2006, report no. A060107 and LISEC, 1998, report no. WB-08-043).

In the MITI test (Mitsubishi, 2006, report no. A060107), Softanol 30 underwent >98% degradation based on the residual amount of substance left on completion of the test and 65% degradation based on biochemical oxygen demand. The conclusion reached is that the substance is readily biodegradable.
In the respirometer test (LISEC, 1998, report no. WB-08 -043), Softanol 30 was found to undergo 54 % degradation (mean of 53 and 55%) based on theoretical oxygen demand (nitrate) and 60% degradation (mean of 59% and 61%) based on chemical oxygen demand. It is considered that the result for chemical oxygen demand takes precedence over the result based on theoretical oxygen demand because the latter relies on calculation of percent carbon content which is difficult to derive accurately for a substance complex mixture such as Softanol 30. The result of 60% meets the required criteria to be considered readily biodegradable except that it is not achieved during the 10 -window specified by the test method. However, according to ECHA guidance Chapter 7B, R.7.9.4.1 (p177) the 10 -day window is waived for substances comprising a mixture of homologous compounds such as technical surfactants, and as Softanol 30 is such a substance, 60% degradation is sufficient to show that it is readily biodegradable. The respirometer test therefore supports the conclusion of the MITI test.
