Under the conditions of this experiment, the test substance was found to cause a cornea, iris and conjunctivae score of 0.00 and a chemosis score of 0.33 when applied to the conjunctival sac of the rabbit eye (24 - 72 h observation period). No corrosion was observed at any of the measuring intervals.
Other effects:
Blue staining of the cornea and conjunctivae of the treated eyes by pigment or coloring of the test article was observed, by all animals.

Executive summary:

In a GLP-compliant eye irritation study performed according to OECD guideline 405, three New Zealand White rabbits were treated with 0.1 g of the test article. The test article was placed into the conjunctival sac of the left eye of each animal; the lids were then held together for about one second in order to prevent loss of the test material. The right eye remained untreated and served as a control. The eyes of each animal were examined 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours after administration. The corrosive properties of the test article and the staining of the treated eye were described and recorded. Animals were checked daily for viability. The observation was terminated 72 hours administration of the test article. Under the conditions of this experiment, the test substance was found to cause a cornea, iris and conjunctivae score of 0.00 and a chemosis score of 0.33 when applied to the conjunctival sac of the rabbit eye (24 - 72 h observation period). The chemosis reaction was reversible within 48 hours. No corrosion was observed at any of the measuring intervals. Blue staining of the cornea and conjunctivae of the treated eyes by pigment or coloring of the test article was observed, in all animals. Due to the results described above, the test article is considered to be not irritating to the rabbit eye.
