Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

the Flash Point of PFBE was determined to be -17 ± 2°C, using a closed cup method designed to be compatible with Method A9 Flash Point of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
-17 °C

Additional information

PFBE (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,6-nonafluorohexene) PFBE did not ignite in a Pensky Martens Closed Cup Flash Point test. In a recent test

the Flash Point of PFBE was determined to be -17 ± 2°C, using a closed cup method designed to be compatible with Method A9 Flash Point of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008. This seemed to contradict the older Pensky Martens test.

However it is believed that the Pensky Martens test was conducted at ambient temperatures and that the vapour concentration generated may well have been above the upper flammability limit of 4.9% v/v, causing a flash not to be observed. As a consequence, a flash point of -17°C is judged to be correct and with an initial boiling point of 58°C PFBE is classified according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC as Highly Flammable (R11) and as a Category 2 Flammable Liquid (H225) according to the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
