Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data

Endpoint:
activated sludge respiration inhibition testing
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Justification for type of information:
Using a structural anlogue of tertiododecylmercaptan for ODM. It has the same terminal thiol (-SH) group which determines its biochemical activity (i.e. aquatic toxicity) and has a slightly shorter alkyl chain length which means it will be more likely to penetrate cellular membranes but will still be highly water insoluble just like ODM.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
not specified
Conclusions:
The results from TDM show that the EC50 value is >10g/L which is well above the quoted water solubility of TDM of 0.25m/L. As TDM is a shorter chain version of ODM then it is valid to assume that ODM will exhibit similar behaviour so we have quoted the EC50 figure as it is scientifically justifiable to do this as the only diference between the structures is the longer alkyl chain which will affect the overall water solubility but will not affect the efficacy of the terminal thiol (-SH) which is the active common functional group in both compounds.
