Description of key information
Aquatic Chronic 3 (H412), according to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

Adequate chronic toxicity data is not available. Acid Violet 048, therefore the aquatic toxicity assessment and classification are based mainly on the short-term toxicity data available on Acid Violet 048 (both acid and salt forms) and Similar Substance 01; the usage of information on a structural analogous can be considered as suitable and appropriated; details on the approach followed are included in the document attached into the "information panel".
Acid Violet 048 is completely dissociated into the aquesous environment; it is very water soluble and it is characterized by a negative log Kow, indicating a low potential for bioaccumulation. The substance is neither rapidly, nor inherently biodegradable and, based on the chemical structure and functional groups present, the hydrolysis can be considered as negligible degradation pathway.
According to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, acute aquatic toxicity is normally determined using L(E)C50 data on fish, crustacean and/or an algal/lemna species; nevertheless it is also specified in the Regulation that data on other species (e.g. Lemna spp.) shall also be considered if the test methodology is suitable. Reliable data is available for Oncorhynchus mykiss, Daphnia magna and Lemna minor species.
No L(E)C50 value was recorded at concentration equal/lower than 1 mg/l, thus the classification criteria for acute (short-term) aquatic hazard (category 1) of the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 are not met.
The outcomes of the available tests suggest that fish is the most sensitive species, thus the classification has to be based on the short-term toxicity to fish; the study on this species fixed the short-term effect level on fish between 10 and 100 mg/l. Therefore, the substance meets the criteria for long-term aquatic hazard (category 3) of the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
In conclusion, the Acid Violet 048 is classified as Aquatic Chronic 3 (H412), according to the CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
