Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria - Sixth revised edition (2015) - Method N.4 (Part III, Section 33.3.1.6)
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Explosive items and items which ignite spontaneously in contact with air at room temperature should not be submitted to this test.
A volume (approximately 16 cm3 and 1 dm3) of the test item is placed in a hot-air circulating type of oven at 100 °C, 120 °C or 140 °C ± 2 °C. Two thermocouples were necessary, one placed in the center of the sample and another between the sample container ant the oven wall.
Each sample container should be housed in a cubic container slightly larger than the sample container. In order to avoid the effect of air circulation, this cover is installed in a second stainless steel cage.

The sample, powder or granular, in its commercial form, should be filled to the brim of the sample container and the container is tapped several times. If the sample settles, more is added. If the sample is heaped it should be leveled to the brim. The container is housed in the cover and hung at the center of the oven. The oven temperature should be raised to 140 °C and kept there for 24 hours. The temperature of the sample and of the oven should be recorded continuously.
The first test is conducted with a 100 mm edge length sample cube. A positive result is obtained if spontaneous ignition occurs or if the temperature of the sample exceeds the oven temperature by 60 °C. If a positive result is obtained, no further test is necessary. If a negative result is obtained, a second test should be conducted at 140 °C with a 25 mm edge length sample cube.

If a positive result is obtained at 140 °C with the substance in a 100 mm edge length sample cube, but not in a 25 mm edge length sample cube, then an additional test with the substance in a 100 mm edge length sample cube should be performed:
- At 120 °C if the substance is to be carried in packaging of more than 450 litre volume but not more than 3000 litre volume.
- At 100 °C if the substance is to be carried in packaging of not more than 450 litre volumes.
A positive result is obtained if spontaneous ignition occurs or if the temperature of the sample exceeds the oven temperature by 60 °C during the 24 hours testing time. Otherwise, the result is considered negative.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)

Results and discussion

Relative self-ignition temperature (solids)
Key result
Relative self-ignition temperature:
> 140 °C
Remarks on result:
no self ignition observed under the test conditions

Any other information on results incl. tables

Assay at 140 °C with a 25 mm edge length cube sample:

At the start of the test, the test item was a blue/green powder and it became a dark green powder.

No self-ignition temperature of the test item was recorded and the temperature of the sample did not exceed the oven temperature by 60 °C (corrected value).

Assay at 140 °C with a 100 mm edge length cube sample:

A self-ignition temperature of the test item was recorded and the temperature of the sample exceeded the oven temperature by 71 °C (corrected value).

An assay at 100 °C with a 100 mm edge length cube sample was then performed as the test item is to be carried in packaging of not more than 450 litre volumes.

At the start of the test, the test item was a blue/green powder and it became a dark green powder.

No self-ignition temperature of the test item was recorded and the temperature of the sample did not exceed the oven temperature by 60 °C (corrected value).

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
No self-ignition temperature of the test item was recorded in various assays up to 140°C.
The test item is not classified as an auto-flammable /self-heating substance.
