Description of key information

A bioaccumulation study was conducted using Golden Orfes over 3 days (Freitag et al (1982)) which resulted in a bioaccumulation factor of 660 L/kg wwt in fish. Using the BCFWIN (v3.0) model with a measured Log Kow value of 4.5, the BCFfish is predicted to be 259.5 L/kg wwt for 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol. In addition, a BCF of 128-436 has been derived by MITI (1992) for the isomer 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol. Based upon these data the BCF value of 660 L/kg in fish is considered to be the most suitable value for risk assessment purposes. The TGD calculations have been shown to be very conservative, estimating a BCF for fish of 1330 L/kg wwt. However, as there are no experimental data available for BCF in earthworms, the TGD calculated BCFearthwormof 380 L/kg wwt, will be used in the risk assessment. Due to experimental BCF for 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol of 660 L/kg and the BCF in the range 128-436 l/kg for 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, together with the predicted BCF of 259.5 L/kg, it can be concluded that 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol has a moderate bioaccumulation potential.
