Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Nitromethane was did not meet the criteria for  readily biodegradable in the OECD 301D test since less than 10% of the nitromethane degraded within 28 days.  In a method developed by the GSF Institute for Ecological Chemistry, 36.2% of the test material degraded to CO2 after 5 days.  These results indicate that nitromethane is inherently biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
inherently biodegradable

Additional information

The ready biodegradability of nitromethane was examined in the OECD 301D test. The test material was not readily biodegradable under the conditions of this test. Less than 10% of the test material degraded within 28 days.

The biodegradation of nitromethane was examined according to a method developed by the GSF Institute for Ecological Chemistry in Munich, West Germany. At a concentration of 50 ug/L of nitromethane, 36.2% of the test material was degraded to CO2 after 5 days under the conditions of this test. These results indicate that nitromethane is inherently biodegradable.

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) was determined using an EPA procedure, Method 410.1 (EPA-600_4-79-020). Within two hours the COD was nearly the same as theoretical.
