Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

One study was performed on Direct Black 19 following ISO 8692 with a EC 50 at 72h based on Grow rate of 14 mg/l.

The study is disregarded since several studies on algae conducted on dark dyes, including those with a modified test system for dye-stuffs, showed that the growth inhibition is not due to a toxic effect of the dye, but due to the light absorption of the stained water. Modified test system is usually conducted putting the dye above the algae testing solution, in a different vessel and not into contact with the alga. The same toxicity expressed as grow rate and yield inhibition has been observed like when in the same condition the algae is into contact with the dye. it has been deduced that the observed toxicity was related to the shading effect of the dye. This method has some limitation because it focuses on the shadow effect but gives no information on the real potential toxicity for algae of the tested substance.
