With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms. The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

This aquatic toxicity assessment was based on the following data:

The acute toxicity of the test substance to zebra fish was measured in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 203. Under the test conditions no visible or lethal effects in zebra-fish at or below 120 mg/L (limit test) were observable (BASF SE 17F0426/11X322, 2013). Based on these data, the test substance is considered to be "with high probability acutely not harmful to fish".

In a static GLP test according to EU method C.2 the acute toxicity of the substance to Daphnia magna was investigated (BASF 1998). After 48 hours no effects were observed in the highest nominal test concentration of 100 mg/L, indicating that the EC0 and EC50 are well above 100 mg/L. Due to the analytics, an arithmetic mean concentration of 74.7 mg/L was estimated. As already stated no effects occured in the highest concentration. Therefore, it is assumed that the substance is not harmful to aquatic invertebrates. Due to product saftey reasons the measured arithmetic mean value of 74.7 mg/L is used for the subsequent hazard assessment of the substance.

The toxicity of the test substance to the green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata was investigated in a GLP guideline study according to OECD 201 (BASF SE 60E0426/11X323, 2013). In this study, the EC10 (72h) on the growth rate was determined to exceed the highest measured concentration of 142 mg/L (based on time weighted average). Based on this outcome, the test substance is considered to be "with high probability not harmful to aquatic algae".

As key study regarding toxicity to microorganisms a non-GLP test according to OECD guideline 209 was performed using domestic activated sludge as inoculum. After 30 minutes of exposure no respiration inhibition could be observed resulting in a EC0 of 1000 mg/L (BASF 90/1170/08/1, 1990). As a further result an EC10 (16h) of 95 mg/L from a test with Pseudomonas putida is available (BASF 1990). For PNEC derivation the EC0 values from the OECD 209 test is used as the test is more realistic for the assessment of toxicity to sewage works.
